Tribute to Prof. Jialing Zhao 

 

Professor Jialiang Zhao is a well renowned ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist,  who was in clinical practice for almost 40 years. He obtained his medical degree from Peking Union Medical College in 1970, and his Master’s degree in 1981.  He then pursued further training at the National Institute of Health, American Institute of Ophthalmology, University of Southern California, Doheny Eye Institute, and Nagoya Hospital. He has published more than 150 academic papers throughout his career. 

He has served in  a number of  organizations in various positions: Director of Ophthalmology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital,  Director of the Chinese Academy of Medical Science Research Center, Chairman of the Committee of the Ophthalmology Society of the Chinese Medical Association, Director of the Ophthalmology Department of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Vice-President of the Rehabilitation Association of China Disabled People’s Federation, Academician of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis, and Vice-President of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology.   

Prof. Zhao has received numerous awards for his contributions to the profession and  his community: China Ophthalmology Outstanding Achievement Award,  Chinese Physician Award, Carl Kupfer International Prevention of Blindness Award, Asia Pacific Cataract and Refractive Surgery Outstanding Achievement Award, Arthur Lim Award  of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, Golden Apple Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Doheny Alumni Achievement Award.

Prof. Zhao’s professional wisdom, advocacies, amiable disposition, and enthusiasm to inspire and teach the many generations of younger ophthalmologists and glaucoma specialists will be very fondly remembered and will remain a  part of his legacy.
