Dr Nobuyuki Shoji graduated from medical school in 1988 and began his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Tokyo Hospital that same year. Dr Shoji did not decide on a specialty during my residency, but my first paper was on metabolic acidosis caused by long-term oral treatment with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. In 1991, he was sent to Musashino Red Cross Hospital to study the one-handed technique of cataract surgery under Director Kimiya Shimizu. Although many surgeons worldwide prefer to perform cataract surgery using two-handed techniques, he believes that the one-handed technique is less invasive and gentler on the eye. Dr Shoji decided to specialize in glaucoma, and under Prof. Makoto Araie’s guidance, he published a paper on the five-year outcomes of trabeculectomy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). In 2001, he moved to the School of Allied Health Sciences for co-medical education and was promoted to professor in 2002. In 2016, he moved to Kitasato University School of Medicine to become a chief professor, a position I continue to hold. In 2016, I had the honor of presiding over the 27th Annual Meeting of the Japan Glaucoma Society in Yokohama. Glaucoma treatment, including surgery, has been his ongoing interest. In the last few years, my institution has become known as one of the leading institutions in Japan for glaucoma surgeries. He has published 185 papers in English on glaucoma, cataracts and refractive surgery. In 2024, He succeeded Prof. Aihara as President of the Japan Glaucoma Society and believe that his first role as president is to increase the number of APGS members and the number of Japanese participants in the APGC.
